Is Master Quest in the Zelda Ocarina of Time Switch 2 Remake?

No, Master Quest is not in the Nintendo Switch 2 Remake of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. While this is a shame, it's honestly an outcome I expected considering how extensive this remake of Ocarina of Time is.

If you fancy taking a crack at Master Quest, then you can officially play it by either purchasing a copy of Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 3DS or hunting down a copy of Wind Waker for the Nintendo GameCube which was bundled with both Ocarina of Time and Master Quest. There's also copies of a GameCube disk containing the base game and Master Quest floating around, but I would make sure you're actually able to play this version as this disk since it may be for a different region. There's also other, more non-official, ways you can play Master Quest…

You might find a copy of Master Quest for the Nintendo 64, but please note that it was never officially released on this console. Due to this, you may be looking at a homemade cartridge or a fake.

Personally, I recommend playing the 3DS version. It's easier to get a hold of and it's harder than the original version of Master Quest! I actually find the map flipping in this version to be the hardest aspect of Master Quest, because it fights against my inbuilt knowledge on where everything is in Ocarina. I kept getting lost the first time I played Master Quest, because nothing was where my muscle memory was telling me it was! (I didn't have much problem with the puzzle changes as a lot of them revolved around playing the Song of Time.)

What is Master Quest?

If you don't know what Master Quest is, then please let me enlighten you. Master Quest is a harder version of Ocarina of Time designed to be played after you've completed the original game. It even sees the Ocarina of Time logo taking on a blue colouring compared to its traditional red. Think the Second Quest for the original The Legend of Zelda. There's actually two versions of Master Quest available - the original one and the 3DS remake version.

The original version of Master Quest was released for the GameCube back in 2003 as a special disk bundled with Ocarina of Time. Depending on where you lived, these disks were either given away as a pre-order bonus with Wind Waker or bundled with the game itself. This version of Master Quest sees the dungeons reworked to be more challenging, more frequent minibosses, Gold Skulltulas being moved to new locations inside the dungeons and items you could previously skip being required.

The 3DS version of Master Quest is unlocked after completing the main story of Ocarina for the first time. After this point, whenever you start a new game you have to decide whether you're playing the normal version or Master Quest. This version of Master Quest has the above changes, but also flips the map so everything which was on the right is now on the left and vice versa. Alongside this, you take double damage from all enemies. That includes the bosses! If you're not prepared, then Link dies very quickly in this version of Master Quest. And that's another reason why I recommend this version of Master Quest over the original. It's truly a challenge for any diehard Ocarina fan!

I hope this has answered your questions about Master Quest even if it wasn't the one you were hoping for! What has remained in Ocarina are the Heart Piece and Gold Skulltula locations. Though some of them are a little different…
