Collecting every Heart Piece in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will make your quest to defeat Ganondorf a little bit easier. Trust me, that extra health will come in handy… To help you out, I've listed all of the Heart Pieces locations in Ocarina of Time down below.

All Heart Piece locations in Zelda Ocarina of Time
There are 36 Heart Pieces hidden around Hyrule in Ocarina of Time. Collecting every single one, along with eight Heart Containers you'll get from the boss fights, will ensure Link is at max health by the time he faces Ganondorf.
Finding every Heart Piece can be quite the trail though if you don't know where to look, so I've organised them by order in which you'll encounter them in the story:
Heart Piece Locations Lon Lon Ranch - Shed Lost Woods - Skull Kids Music Memory Minigame Lost Woods - Lone Skull Kid Serenade Kakariko Graveyard - Unmarked Grave Kakariko Graveyard - Dampé's Grave-Digging Tour Hyrule Castle Town - Lost Dog Goron City - Spinning Jug Death Mountain Crater - Wall Alcove Death Mountain Crater - Business Scrub Kakariko Village - Impa's House Cow Shed Hyrule Castle Town - Bombchu Bowling Alley Zora River - Central Pillar Zora River - Waterfall Zora Domain - Torches Lake Hylia - Fishing Pond Gerudo Valley - Chest Gerudo Valley - Behind Waterfall Kakariko Graveyard - Ledge Kakariko Village - Windmill Kakariko Village - Rooftop Man Kakariko Graveyard - Dampé's Race Kakariko Village - House of Skulltula Hyrule Field - Business Scrub Password Hyrule Field - Locked Chest Near Gerudo Valley Death Mountain Trail - Above Dodongo Cavern Death Mountain Crater - Top Rock Pillar Zora Fountain - Iceberg Zora Fountain - Bottom of Fountain Lake Hylia - Atop Lab Tower Lake Hylia - Laboratory Dive Hyrule Castle Town - Treasure Box Minigame Zora River - Frog Chorus Zora River - Bug Catching Minigame Gerudo Fortress - Rooftop Gerudo Fortress - Horseback Archery Range Evil Desert Colossus - Atop Stone Archway Heart Piece locations only used in the original gameThree Heart Piece locations are completely different in the Switch 2 Remake compared to the original and 3DS versions of Ocarina of Time. If you're playing the original version of Ocarina, here's where to find these Heart Pieces:
Hyrule Field - Lake Hylia Entrance Hole
- Child and Adult timeline
- Stone of Agony, 10 Rupees and Bombs (or Song of Storms) required
Once you have the Stone of Agony head to the entrance of Lake Hylia in Hyrule Field. Run about the area surrounded by the four fences until the Stone of Agony alerts you to the location of a hole. Now you can use Bombs or the Song of Storms to reveal a hole. Head on inside the hole and purchase the Heart Piece from the Business Scrub for 10 Rupees.
Ice Cavern - Red Ice
- Adult timeline
- Bottle of Blue Fire required
Progress through the Ice Cavern until you reach the room with the spinning blade. Once there, take the right-hand passageway and remove the red ice using Blue Fire as you go.
You'll soon find yourself in a room with another blue fire and a Heart Piece trapped inside some red ice. Pop some Blue Fire in an empty bottle before using it to ice surrounding the Heart Piece. Fun fact - this is the only Heart Piece in Ocarina of Time which is found in a dungeon.
Hyrule Field - Northwest Tree Hole
- Adult timeline
- Stone of Agony, Bombs, Iron Boots and Zora Tunic required
In the north-western corner of Hyrule Field, not far from Lon Lon Ranch, stands a lone tree. There's a hole hidden at the base of this tree, which the Stone of Agony will happily tell you about. Use Bombs or the Song of Storms to open it up.
Once inside, pop on the Iron Boots and drop to the bottom of the pond to grab your Heart Piece. Like the above Heart Piece, the Zora Tunic isn't technically required for this Heart Piece but it will make getting it easier.
Lon Lon Ranch - Shed
- Child timeline
When it comes to hunting down Heart Pieces in Ocarina of Time, this is the best place to start! Head to the tower in Lon Lon Ranch and solve the small block puzzle inside. Doing so will reveal a tunnel and crawling through it will take you to a Heart Piece.
Lost Woods - Skull Kids Music Memory Minigame
- Child timeline
- Ocarina required (Both Fairy Ocarina and Ocarina of Time work)
Take the right-hand path upon entering the Lost Woods from Kokiri Forest to find yourself in an area where two Skull Kids stand atop a stump. Stand on the tree stump in front of them and use your current ocarina. The Skull Kids will challenge you to follow along with their song!
This is your basic memory minigame. The Skull Kids will play a song, adding additional notes as they go, and you'll have to copy it perfectly. The song will be played twice every time a new note is added to help you remember it. In the Switch 2 Remake, the song is only played once after the first round.
You'll have to complete the minigame three times to get the Heart Piece. Best of luck!
Lost Woods - Lone Skull Kid Serenade
- Child timeline
- Saria's Song required
After you've learned Saria's Song, you need to visit the lone Skull Kid in the Lost Woods. It can be easily found by entering the woods from Kokiri Forest and taking the left-hand path. All you have to do is jump atop the stump and play Saria's Song to get your Heart Piece.
Kakariko Graveyard - Unmarked Grave
- Child and Adult timeline
If you want to get this Heart Piece during the Child timeline, then you must do it at night as the little boy will tell you off for pulling gravestones during the day.
To actually find the piece, head to the top row of gravestones and go to the right-hand top row of graves. Now go to the grave next to the right-hand wall and open it. Drop down into the tomb and you'll find a chest containing the Heart Piece.
Playing the original game?Head to the top row of gravestones and look for the one fourth from the right. If it helps, this gravestone should be unmarked. Pull it back and jump inside the tomb. Next, use the Sun's Song to kill the Re-Dead. Afterwards, you'll need to play the song for a second time to make the chest containing the Heart Piece appear. In the Remake, this chest contains a Recovery Heart.
Kakariko Graveyard - Dampé's Grave-Digging Tour
- Child timeline
- Night only
- 10 Rupees per grave digging (Extra cost for Heart Piece)
To avoid missing this mini-game, it's best to visit the Graveyard as early as possible once night has fallen. It's a good idea to arrive with a full wallet of Rupees!
To get the Heart Piece, you have to pay Dampé 10 Rupees to dig a spot of soft dirt. There are multiple spots spaced out around the graveyard. The Heart Piece appears randomly in a spot where you have to pay Dampé some extra Rupees to dig. To confirm this, I did some game resetting to get the Heart Piece in this minigame multiple times! I found it in the left-hand spot on the horizontal dig spot row on the right-hand side and in the spot opposite the fourth top-row grave from the right-hand graveyard wall.
Playing the original game?Dampé's Grave-Digging Tour is only available between 18:00 to 21:00. You can use a Gossip Stone to learn what time it currently is in game. There are still multiple spots, all spaced between the cobblestones. It's best to wait until Dampé's feet are touching the dirt to ensure he's digging in the right place.
Hyrule Castle Town - Lost Dog
- Child timeline
- Night only
To get it, wait for night to fall in Hyrule Castle Town and for the dogs to arrive. While most of these dogs are strays, there's one, Richard, who has an owner. In the Remake, you need to wait until you've opened the entrance to Death Mountain Trail. When you return to Castle Town, you'll see that the Dog Lady has lost her dog.
To find Richard, head into the back alleys, go past the Treasure Box shop and continue forward until you're in the alley leading back to the main square. Here you'll spot a white dog running up and down the alley. Head over and press 'A' when the 'Play' option appears. If it's Richard, then the dog will do a little spin when you interact with it. (There may be another white dog in this area, so, if you picked the wrong dog, just interact with it to find Richard!)
Now return to the Dog Lady for your Heart Piece. Richard will go missing again though and she'll give you 20 Rupees for finding him again.
Playing the original game? You'll find this white dog running around near the stall to the right of the bazaar. (He's in the corner.) Stand near him and Richard will begin to follow you. Now you can take him back to his owner who lives in the Back Alley. If a different dog begins to follow you, then just head to Hyrule Castle to make them vanish.
Goron City - Spinning Jug
- Child timeline
- Goron's Bracelet required
- Having Bombs will make it easier
First, light all of the torches around the large jug to make it begin spinning. Next, start tossing Bomb Flowers or Bombs into the jug to make it stop spinning. It needs to land on the smiling face for you to get the Heart Piece, but this is decided randomly so it may take a few attempts. If you have trouble lining up your throws, you can always wait until you've found the Bomb Bag in Dodongo Cavern. In the Remake, the Hookshoot spot is the perfect place for throwing your bombs.
Death Mountain Crater - Wall Alcove
- Child and Adult timeline
- Easier with Goron Tunic
This Heart Piece is hidden in alcove in the climbable wall in Death Mountain Crater. To reach it as Child Link, you'll need to enter the crater from the Death Mountain summit entrance. You'll then have a short period of time in which to climb down the wall and grab the Heart Piece. I recommend having at least five Hearts before attempting this. You will be healed when you pick up the Heart Piece.
The Heart Piece is easier to get as Adult Link, because you can use the Goron Tunic to prevent death by heat.
Death Mountain Crater - Business Scrub
- Child timeline
- 100 Rupees
As Child Link, enter Death Mountain Crater from the top entrance and head left until you can stop a Business Scrub below you on a ledge. Drop down onto this ledge and use the Fairy Slingshot to defeat the Business Scrub. To say sorry for attacking you, the Business Scrub will sell you a Heart Piece for 100 Rupees. Remember: Child Link will take damage inside the crater and, if it's equipped, your Deku Shield may turn to ash.
Kakariko Village - Impa's House Cow Shed
- Child and Adult timeline
There's a Heart Piece on the roof of the cow shed behind Impa's House. First, you can wait until you've visited the Great Fairy atop Death Mountain after completing Dodongo Cavern. The owl will then offer you a free flight back down to Kakariko Village. Take this flight and he'll leave you atop the roof of Impa's House. Now you can jump down from this roof onto the cow shed roof and grab your Heart Piece.
You can wait until your Adult Link and use the Hookshot / Longshot on the vines next to Impa's House. This will take you to a ledge and, from there, you jump across to the roof before dropping down onto the cow shed.
Playing the original game?In the original game, the cow shed containing the Heart Piece is actually inside of Impa's House. You need to drop down onto the roof of the cucco pen and then go inside via a hole in the house wall. This can be done using the above methods, but you can also reach the roof by gliding from the construction site opposite using a cucco.
Hyrule Castle Town - Bombchu Bowling Alley
- Child timeline
- 10 Rupees per game
After you've completed Dodongo Cavern, the Bombchu Bowling Alley will open in Hyrule Castle Town. Each game costs 10 Rupees and the Heart Piece is available as a prize after you've won the minigame twice. This means you need to complete the mini-game three times to get the Heart Piece.
To win you need to send a Bombchu into the target at the end of the alley. Matters are not helped, however, by there being a series of obstacles to avoid. Thankfully, you can destroy the grass obstacles with a Bombchu. Hitting the cucco cutouts will cause them to spin out of your path and pause for a short amount of time. The moving spikes, however, will destroy your Bombchu if you hit them.
For targets directly in front of Link, send the Bombchu out in front of them. For targets on the walls or ceiling, angle your placement to make the target so the Bombchu goes along the wall. You can also do this for the final target if you're fed up of hitting the big cucco.
Playing the original game?It costs 30 Rupees per game and the rewards are selected at random, which means you might have to play this minigame multiple times before the Heart Piece is offered as a prize.
Zora River - Central Pillar
- Child and Adult timeline
- Cucco required if Child
This Heart Piece sits atop a pillar in the middle of Zora River, near the Frog Chorus. To reach it as Child Link, you'll need to use the nearby cucco.
First, take the cucco upriver just to the point where the landscape curves to reach the waterfall. Now look back on where you've come and you'll vines growing against a cliff. Use the cucco to reach the land in front of these vines.
Abandon this cucco and climb the vines. Atop the cliff, you'll want to head to the area opposite the bombable rock. There you'll see another ledge to your left. Jump over here and head into the hole to find a cucco.
Pick up the cucco and leave the hole. With this bird in hand, you can glide down to the Heart Piece. You can wait until your Adult Link, however, as it's also reachable using the flying plant if you planted a Magic Bean in the soft dirt by the Bean Seller in the Child timeline.
Playing the original game? The second cucco will be waiting for you atop the cliff. Simply pick it up and glide down to the Heart Piece.
Zora River - Waterfall
- Child and Adult timeline
- Cucco required if Child
As Child Link, carry a cucco all the way upstream until you're by the waterfall. Now, still holding the cucco, jump across to the Heart Piece. As Adult Link, you can try jumping across to this Heart Piece but the cucco method is far easier.
Zora Domain - Torches
- Child timeline
- Deku Stick required
First, light a Deku Stick using one of the torches in the royal chamber. Fire in-hand, light the stone torch on the stairs. This will always stay lit and is easier to return to if something goes wrong with the following torches. I also recommend using a new Deku Stick at this point to reset your fire time.
Here's where to find the torches:
- At the bottom of the staircase leading to King Zora.
- Left of the shop entrance.
- Left of the previous torch.
- On the edge of the water further along from the previous torch.
- Run forward to the torch on the walkway in the shallow water.
- Follow the walkway behind the waterfall and light the two torches there.
If you've done the above correctly, then a chest containing a Heart Piece should appear between the waterfall torches.
Playing the original game? Here are the torch locations in the original version of Ocarina:
- The one outside the shop.
- Run forward into the shallow water and light the torch there.
- Stay in the shallow water and run behind the waterfall where you'll find two torches. Try to hug the cliff wall as much as possible to prevent putting out your Deku Stick.
Lake Hylia - Fishing Pond
- Child timeline
- 10 Rupees to fish
Catch a fish which is 50cm or more and you'll be rewarded with a Heart Piece. You'll typically find these fish swimming around the logs sticking out of the water. Just remember to get the shop owner to weigh it! (And maybe steal his hat while you're at it.)
Playing the original game?It costs 20 Rupees to fish and you'll need to catch a fish that weighs 10 pounds or more.
Gerudo Valley - Chest
- Child and Adult timeline
- Cucco required if Child
- Longshot required if Adult
There's a Heart Piece hidden in a chest on a ledge on the far side of the gorge in Gerudo Valley. (By far side, I mean the side nearest Gerudo's Fortress.) It's on the ledge opposite the one with the grey boulder on it.
To reach it as Child Link, grab a cucco and then fly from the bridge onto the chest. As Adult Link, you can Hookshot the chest.
Gerudo Valley - Behind Waterfall
- Child and Adult timeline
- Cucco required if Child
- Magic Beam required if Adult
There's a Heart Piece hidden in an alcove behind the waterfall in Gerudo Valley. The downside? You need to be at the bottom of the gorge to reach it.
As Child Link, use the cucco to fly down to the platform at the bottom of the gorge. After landing on this platform, toss the cucco away before running to the end near the waterfall. Here you'll find a set of stairs leading you to the Heart Piece. In the original game, it's simply a ladder and you can avoid getting caught in the current by jumping behind the waterfall.
To get it as Adult Link, you'll need to ensure you've planted a Magic Bean in the Gerudo Valley soft dirt as Child Link. When you return seven years later, this bean will have grown into a flying plant which will take you to the Heart Piece.
Kakariko Graveyard - Ledge
- Adult timeline
- Magic Bean required
As Child Link, plant a Magic Bean in the soft dirt in the Graveyard. When you return as Adult Link, it will have grown into a flying plant which will take you to the top of the ledge. Once there, roll into the crate to find the Heart Piece.
Kakariko Village - Windmill
- Adult timeline
- Win Dampé race required
There's a Heart Piece sitting atop a wooden beam inside the windmill. To reach it, you first have to win Dampé's race as the exit will bring you to the upper part of the windmill. From there you can use the central, rotating, beam to reach the Heart Piece.
Kakariko Village - Rooftop Man
- Adult timeline
- Hookshot / Longshot required
Once you have the Hookshot, go to the ledge either behind the Potion Shop or by the pots near its entrance. In both locations, you'll be able to use the Hookshot on the vines growing on the roof of Granny's Potion Shop. Now all you have to do is drop down to the smaller roof section and talk to the man sitting there for your Heart Piece.
Playing the original game?In the original game, you can reach this man by using the Longshot to cross the roofs of Kakariko Village. Though you might be able to get it a little earlier by performing a very well placed side jump off the watchtower.
1 of 3 Caption AttributionKakariko Graveyard - Dampé's Race
- Adult timeline
- After you've earned the Hookshot
If you can beat Dampé's race in a minute or less, then he will reward you with a Heart Piece. This is a lot easier to achieve in the Switch 2 Remake since the race course is shorter. I actually managed to do it without having to use the Hookshot / Longshot and without sprinting. I even had time to spare at the end.
Playing the original game? The trick to achieving this is to use the Longshot on a torch in the final room. Doing so will shoot you straight across the gorge! It's also a good idea to roll as much as possible.
Kakariko Village - House of Skulltula
- Child and Adult timeline
- 50 Gold Skulltula Tokens
Visit the House of Skulltula once you've found 50 Gold Skulltulas to get yourself a Heart Piece. Check out my Gold Skulltula locations guide if you need a hand finding them.
Hyrule Field - Business Scrub Password
- Child and Adult timeline
- Bombs and time travel required
There's a hole on the small piece of land to the right of the entrance of Hyrule Castle Town, which can be opened using a Bomb. You'll find a Business Deku Scrub inside this hole, but he won't actually sell you anything if you don't have a password.
To find the password, you travel forward in time and, as Adult Link, read the fairy note on the tree opposite the hole. Here you'll learn that the password is 'Sell somethin', will ya?'. If you try using this password as Adult Link, however, you'll learn that the Business Deku is out of stock! Well, he's out of stock at this point in time.
Time travel back to Child Link's era and return to the hole. Now use the password and you can purchase a Heart Piece for 100 Rupees.
Hyrule Field - Locked Chest Near Gerudo Valley
- Child and Adult timeline
- Time travel required
There's a chest beneath the overhanging cliff east of the entrance to Gerudo Valley. When you first find this chest as Child Link, you won't be able to open it. There is a way to get inside it though!
What you need to do is revisit this chest as Adult Link and read the fairy note next to the now open chest to learn it held a Heart Piece. With this fairy note read, time travel back to being Child Link and return to the chest. You'll now be able to open it and get the Heart Piece.
Death Mountain Trail - Above Dodongo Cavern
- Adult timeline
- Magic Bean required
First, plant a Magic Bean in the soft dirt outside the entrance to Dodongo Cavern as Child Link. When you return as Adult Link, this bean will have grown into a flying plant which will allow you to reach the Heart Piece.
You may be able to reach the Heart Piece as Child Link though by backflipping from the ledge containing the Bomb Flowers you use to open Dodongo's Cavern. Make sure you're attempting to backflip off the lower fence and be prepared for this to not work! It is a little fiddly.
Death Mountain Crater - Top Rock Pillar
- Adult timeline
- Bolero of Fire and Magic Bean required
For this Heart Piece, you first need to make sure you've learned Bolero of Fire. With this tune in your song book, return to the past and, as Child Link, use it to warp to the Death Mountain Crater. Once there, plant a Magic Bean in the soft soil on the edge of the warp platform. Be quick or else Link will burn!
With that seed planted, go back to the future. As Adult Link, play Bolero of Fire again. You'll find the bean has grown into a flying plant, which can somehow survive the crater's heat. Jump on the plant and it will take you to the Heart Piece atop the spiked rock.
Zora Fountain - Iceberg
- Adult timeline
There's a Heart Piece sitting on one of the icebergs in the fountain. You can reach it by jumping from berg to berg. Be careful, those bergs are slippy!
Zora Fountain - Bottom of Fountain
- Adult timeline
- Iron Boots and Zora's Tunic required
Once you have the Iron Boots, pop them on and sink to the bottom of Zora Fountain. Down there, you'll find a Heart Piece. You don't technically need the Zora's Tunic for this Heart Piece, but wearing it will make getting it a little easier. (Since Link won't start drowning.)
Lake Hylia - Atop Lab Tower
- Adult timeline
- Magic Bean or Scarecrow's Song required
Plant a Magic Bean in the soft dirt outside the lab in Lake Hylia. When you return as Adult Link, it will have grown into a flying plant. You can use it to reach the lab's roof where, after climbing a ladder, you'll find this Heart Piece. Though you can also use the Scarecrow's Song to reach this roof.
Lake Hylia - Laboratory Dive
- Adult timeline
- Gold Scale required
After getting the Golden Scale from catching a fish of 60cm or more at the Fishing Hole, visit the Lake Hylia Laboratory. Inside swim to the bottom of the tank, ensuring Link touches the bottom. Talk to the scientist when you return to the surface and he'll give you a Heart Piece.
Hyrule Castle Town - Treasure Box Minigame
- Child timeline
- Night only
- Lenses of Truth required
- 10 Rupees per game
You'll get this Heart Piece for reaching the end of the Treasure Box minigame. While you can achieve this through pure luck, the chances of doing so are incredibly low. Instead, it's far better to wait until you've gotten the Lenses of Truth from the Bottom Of The Well and cheat by looking into the chests.
Zora River - Frog Chorus
- Child timeline
- Song of Storms required
Play the Song of Storms to the Frog Chorus and they'll give you a Heart Piece!
Zora River - Bug Catching Minigame
- Child timeline
- All six 'grey noted' Ocarina songs
To get this Heart Piece, you first need to play all six of the 'grey noted' songs to the Frog Chorus. These songs are: Zelda's Lullaby, Saria's Song, Epona's Song, Sun's Song, Song of Time and Song of Storms.
With that done, use your Ocarina at the Frog Chorus again to make them jump out. This time, however, a butterfly will be flying above a frog's head. As you might have noticed when playing them the other songs, each frog represents a different note on the ocarina. Now you need to play the note that matches the frog with a bug flying above them. Getting this correct causes the frog to eat the bug and you need to keep going until all of the frogs are nice and fat. You'll get a Heart Piece in return for this hearty meal!
Here's which frog corresponds to which button:
- Dark Blue - Y
- Grey - X
- Red - A
- Light Blue - L
- Yellow - R
The frog order I had to complete for this Heart Piece was: L, Y, A, R, Y, A, R, L, R, L, R, A, Y, L.
Gerudo Fortress - Rooftop
- Adult timeline
- Longshot and Scarecrow's Song required
I highly recommend rescuing all of the carpenters before attempting to get this Heart Piece as navigating the Gerudo Fortress will be far easier! To actually find the Heart Piece, reach the highest roof of the fortress and then head west as if you're heading to the desert. This will soon take you to a gap Link can't jump with a chest sitting on the other side.
Play the Scarecrow's Song to make Pierre appear and use the Longshot on him to zip across the gap. Now all you have to do is grab the Heart Piece from the chest.
Gerudo Fortress - Horseback Archery Range
- Adult timeline
- Epona required
- 20 Rupees per round
Get over 750 points in the Horseback Archery Range to earn this Heart Piece. Best of luck! In the original game, it cost 20 Rupees per round and you need to get over 1,000 points for the Heart Piece.
Evil Desert Colossus - Atop Stone Archway
- Adult timeline
- Requiem of Spirit and Magic Bean required
Our last Heart Piece is another Magic Bean one! First, make sure your Child Link before playing Requiem of Spirit to travel to the Evil Desert Colossus. Once there, you'll find a patch of soft dirt just outside the Spirit Temple for Magic Bean planting purposes.
Now travel back to the future and return to the Evil Desert Colossus as Adult Link. Yet again, a flying plant will be awaiting you. Let it take you on a short flight until you're able to jump down onto the stone archway. There you'll find the final Heart Piece!
Best of luck finding every Heart Piece in Ocarina of Time! If you're hunting down more collectibles, don't forget to check my Gold Skulltula locations guide.
